Youth Justice Worker

  • Position Scope:

    The Youth Justice Program supports young people in court matters and with community based orders. It helps young people link back into schools and further education.  The Program works in conjunction with parents/guardians, welfare coordinators, school chaplains and other school staff to better assist youth in a smoother transition back to education.

 Role Purpose

Provide support to aboriginal youth involved with the Juvenile Justice system or who are at risk including:

-Attending youth justice meetings.

-Visiting remand and youth training centres.

-Supervising bonds.

-Organising community-based orders.

-Develop and maintain support plans for youth that include:

-A holistic assessment of the young person’s needs.

-The involvement of families and other community members/mentors, where appropriate, to address family breakdown and conflict (mediation support);

-Active involvement of other Family Services and medical workers within Njernda Corporation to ensure all the clients’ needs are met(housing, drug and alcohol, anger management, sexual health, family planning, counselling, etc.).

-Develop, engage and participate in group programs and activities (e.g. homework classes, Hip hop, dance, sport etc) to encourage youth to discuss and address issues that affect them.

-Investigate funding opportunities that will support aboriginal youth program initiatives in the community.

-Develop and maintain links with other aboriginal and mainstream services which support young people.

 

Key Responsibilities

Respond to the needs of community members, providing support to individuals and families as required including:

-Information and Referral to other services

-Financial assistance

-Advocacy

-Transport

-Understand and promote the philosophy and need for an aboriginal health/family service.

-Work as a team member in conjunction with other Njernda Services

-Support other team members in their work.

-Work cooperatively to develop local community events e.g. family days, NAIDOC week, men’s and women’s health days etc..

-Attend and participate in staff meetings, general staff meetings and health planning team meetings.

-Represent the organization and/or community in forums outside the agency (e.g. at court, on panels, on Committees etc.).

-Participate in ongoing training and development.

-Always ensure the confidentiality of client information.

-Maintain appropriate data and program and client records.

-In consultation with the programs and services manager, monitor and evaluate program delivery.

-Other duties as directed.

-Act, always, in a professional manner in accordance with the policies and practices of the Corporation.

 

Key Selection Criteria

Applicants must possess:

-A proven knowledge and understanding of aboriginal people and aboriginal culture.

-Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues relating to and needs of aboriginal families in the area.

-A good understanding of issues effecting aboriginal youth in the Echuca district and knowledge of services available within the region.

-Understanding and commitment to Aboriginal community controlled medical/family services.

-An ability to communicate effectively with aboriginal people and handle issues in a sensitive manner.

-Sound negotiation skills.

-An ability to advocate on behalf of individuals and families.

-Good written and verbal communication skills.

-The ability to maintain records and manage time effectively and efficiently.

-Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of a multi-skilled team

-An ability to work alongside and engage with stakeholders

-Certificate 4 in youth, family intervention or a willingness to further your education

-Basic computer skills.

The successful applicant will be required to undergo satisfactory pre-employment checks, including providing at least two professional referees, completion of a medical declaration, Police Records Check, Working With Children Check, Victorian Driver’s License, and proof of identify and qualifications.
